Another consideration is how much light you want entering your room. Some people need complete darkness to sleep in, and when the full moon is out, they have trouble getting to sleep with that light shining through. In these extreme cases, you may be well advised to get a set of blackout blinds, that will stop any light at all from coming in. 
This is particularly true for people that do shift work and need to sleep during the day. Other people love the look of filtered light through a bedroom window, and would much prefer a sheer fabric to allow this to occur, without losing their privacy.

Of course, when it comes to children it’s a whole different ballgame. Kids love bright and colourful displays in their room. For a child, their bedroom is a place to express who they are, it is the one place in their life that they can truly call their own, and decorate to suit their personality. Of course, a childs personality changes from month to month (and even week to week sometimes), so these rooms will probably be redecorated more regularly than other rooms in your house. It is important that your child has a say in the choice of kids bedroom curtains, as they need to have something that is going to make them feel in control of their space.
Don’t fall into the trap of girls bedroom curtains having to be pinks and purples and boys bedroom curtains having to be reds and blues. This stereotypical behaviour limits your childs expression. Instead of being gender specific, think about what their favourite movie characters are, or what hobbies they like, there are so many different motifs that you can get in childrens curtains that you will be spoilt for choice. Some parents like to get curtains that match the childs bedding, but I would warn you to be careful when doing that. Sometimes it can be too much and make the room look cluttered.
Remember, the more you involve your child in the decision making, the ownership and pride they will feel in their room. This benefits you as a parent, because they will most likely put more effort into keeping it clean, meaning less work for you in the long term.
