Blinds Shades and Curtains – Revisited

In a previous post – Shades Blinds and Shutters – A Brief Rundown we gave a brief overview of some of the different types of blinds shades and shutters that are available. Soon after that post I received some emails from people that said that I hadn’t included their favorites. As you can imagine, there is such a huge range out there that I was bound to miss a few, so I’m following that post up with this one, and including a few glaring omissions, and some all time favorite styles of mine, and fellow readers.

Roman Blinds – The roman blind is a classic style that is popular amongst people who want a traditional look in their home, while still benefitting from the functionality of a blind. They are basically a length of fabric with dowels attached horizontally at regular intervals. What this does is allow the blind to fold up under itself when it’s raised, while laying flat on your window when it’s down.

Pleated Shades – Pleated shades are a newer style of window covering, very popular in a contemporary setting. Unlike a roman blind, these blinds are raised at regular intervals, creating a corrugated effect. Out of all the blinds & shades available, these blinds are one of the most effective for insulation purposes in your home. When raised they will fold up will neatly along the top of the window, barely noticeable, allowing you an uninterrupted view outside.

blinds shades 2Vertical Blinds – Verticals are used predominately on large windows, and sliding glass doors. They are made up of individual slats that hang vertically down the length of your window or door. Like pleated blinds, they will fold up against one corner of your door, completely out of the way when not needed.

Roll Up Blinds – One of the cheapest styles available, many people discount them thinking that cheap means not so functional. The truth is that these blinds are quite handy in the right setting. They will roll up around a tube at the top, and are raised and lowered using a spring mechanism, meaning no messy cords hanging down the side.

Sheer Curtains – A beautiful selection for places like your kitchen or as a backing to a larger curtain in your living room. Sheer curtains are translucent, and create a wonderful light diffusion in your home, protecting your furniture from harmful UV rays, while still allowing the room to remain bright and cheery.

Aluminium Blinds – Usually used in patios or sunrooms, blinds made from aluminum make a great privacy shade, as they are completely solid, made up of individual slats of alumimum that neatly fit into each other. Perfect for the outdoor or semi outdoor setting, as they will be able to withstand the harsh elements.

Cafe Curtains – Cafe curtains originated in cafes and restaurants (hence the name), and were designed to give the patrons privacy while still allowing a country charm. Nowadays they are predominant in kitchens, as they lend themselves well to the ambiance of that room, giving it an open and inviting atmosphere.

Blackout Blinds – I don’t know how I missed this style in my last post, as out of all the blinds out there, blackout blinds serve one particular purpose; to keep as much light out of a room as possible. Usually lined with a special blackout material, these blinds are perfect for bedrooms that see lots of light and home cinema setups.

Conservatory Roof Blinds – If you are lucky enough to own a conservatory, then you will know what a multi purpose space they can give you and your family. The only problem is that there are many windows to be covered, and they are quite often in odd places and of odd shapes. Conservatory roof blinds come to the rescue, with the versatility of fitting almost any shaped window you need.

Once again, I’m sure there are more that haven’t been covered, and if I’ve yet again missed some of your favorite blinds and shades, feel free to let me know. I may even make this an ongoing series, with the aim of giving people a brief overview of each style. If you need more information about any of the above, you are sure to find more by using the search function available in the sidebar.

Shades Blinds and Shutters – A Brief Rundown

I would like to give you a brief rundown on some of the more popular styles of shades blinds and shutters that we have discussed so far. Each window treatment has a different use, and gives a different atmosphere in your home. In order to make an informed decision, it is important that you have a little knowledge about the following types of blinds and shades…

Wood Blinds – The most popular style of material for blinds by far, wood adds natural warmth to your home that can’t be achieved by any other type of material. The downside to wood is that it needs regular maintenance to stay in tip top condition.

Faux Wood Blinds – For those that cannot afford wood, but love that natural grainy look, faux wood is probably the next best thing. The two main materials used in the production of faux wood are wood composites and PVC. Faux wood is only a fraction of the price of the real thing.

Shutters – There are two main categories in the world of shutters, based on the width of the slats. The smaller window shutters generally have a slat size of 1 or 1 1/2 inches. Larger slat sizes are often referred to as plantation shutters, and are generally used on the exterior of your home, or on larger windows.

Mini Blinds – One of the most inexpensive styles of blinds that you can get, mini blinds are characterised by their small horizontal slats. There is some confusion between mini blinds and venetian blinds, but the two phrases mean basically the same thing.

shades blindsSliding window Blinds – The most popular choice for vertical blinds are for large sliding doors. They are perfect for this use, as the blinds tuck right away into the unused corer of the room when they are not needed, while giving overall coverage to your door when it gets sunny outside.

Panel Track Blinds – This is a newer style of blind that is increasing in popularity. It consists of larger horizontal lengths of material that fold into each other when not in use. They work similar to the principle of the vertical blind, but also make great room dividers.

Cellular Shades – The biggest benefit of cellular shades is their amazing insulation properties. These are a lightweight shade that packs a real punch. Some people refer to them as honeycomb shades, because of the shape of the individual cells. You can get these shades in single, double or triple cell versions; the greater the number of cells, the better its insulating properties.

Woven Wood Shades – The name of these shade blinds is a little misleading, as although there are some that are made of actual wood, the more popular styles use bamboo, jutes and reeds to create the shade. Woven wood shades are a perfect solution in any place that you are trying to create a natural organic feel.

Roman Shades – Roman shades are usually made using fabric, although there are styles created in vinyl and even bamboo. The roman shade is a classic window covering that rolls up to the top of your window in pleats when not in use. Roman blinds are great for smaller windows in the bedroom, giving you complete privacy.

Roller Shades – Out of all the shades available, the roller shade is the most simple in design. Roller shades consist of nothing more than a tube of aluminum, with a length of fabric wrapped around it. When not in use, the fabric is wrapped around the tube at the top of the window via a pulley system.

Sheer Shades – For those times when you want a little bit of privacy but don’t want to block out the world (or the sun) entirely, sheer shades are the way to go. They make an elegant solution for places like the kitchen, and are usually made from very thin and light weight fabrics,

Solar Screens – Similar to roller blinds, but instead of using material solar shades use are usually plastics and synthetics. They work on the principles used in sunglasses, diffusing the light while still allowing you to see out your window. They are particularly popular on large glass doors or windows that look out onto a view.

As you can seem there are a huge variety of window shades and blinds out there, and we have only touched the surface, For more information on any of these individual styles, feel free to browse through the rest of this site.

Sun Shades – The Future’s So Bright

One of the growing trends in modern homes is to utilise wall space as much as possible by opening it up and having large windows wherever possible. While this is a great look for a home, and can be especially effective if you have a nice view to look out on, it can be a difficult task covering all these windows during times when it’s hot and glary outside. Sun shades are a great option in these situations, they are versatile and inexpensive, and are fairly easy to install.

Sun shades are best used on larger windows and big glass sliding doors. It can be difficult getting coverings for these larger spaces, and a sun shade is a great choice. You can get either interior or exterior sun shades, and the one you choose will totally depend on what sort of a look you want for your home. If you have them outside, keep in mind that you will need to go out there in order to close them, and if it’s the middle of summer and stinking hot out there, this can be a bit of an effort.

Sun shades are not a blackout solution for your home, they will filter the sun out, but by no means will they stop it from coming in completely. If you want to eliminate all sunlight, then you are going to have to look at something more suitable like blackout blinds or curtains. The benefit of a sun shade over these treatments is that you can still see out of it, without frying to a crisp.

sun shadesAnother thing that sun shades are not is insulators. They will have a little bit of an insulating effect in your house, but generally only about 10 – 15% of the heat will be blocked using this style of covering. For a more thorough insulation, then thermal curtains are the way to go. Of course, you can have the best of both worlds by installing sun shades on the outside and thermal curtains on the inside. That way, you can look at your view until it starts getting too hot, and then close the curtains over.

Of course, the home is not the only place that uses this type of covering. Car sun shades, while being completely different from the type of shade you install on your home windows, are called the same thing and perform the same function. The car is a notorious collector of heat, and having your car parked out in the sun for more than half an hour can raise the temperature inside dramatically. Not only does this make it impossible to get in and drive, it is also extremely damaging for your upholstery, and a car sun shade will help with that immensely.

The sun can damage your homes upholstery just as much as your cars. Not just your upholstery, but area rugs and wooden bench tops can be effected to. As important as the sun is to our daily lives, we really need to be careful that we are not over exposing our homes, our cars, or ourselves to too much of those harmful rays.

The materials used in manufacturing sun shades are usually a mix of plastics and synthetics. They are actually quite similar in design to sunglasses, and they also have different levels of shading available. You can get anything from a slight tint, which will just take the worst of the glare off, to a complete privacy shade, which will stop prying eyes from seeing into your home.

Blackout Shades – Hiding From the Sun

It seems sometimes that us humans have a love hate relationship with the sun. On the one hand, we acknowledge its importance in our lives, we know that it is the source of all life, and some of us even worship it. People spend their whole lives chasing summer around the globe, eager to get as much of it as they can. On the other hand, we spend vast amounts of time, effort and money in trying to minimise our exposure to it. This is especially true in the home, with a whole range of blackout options available to the home owner, including blackout shades.

This style of shade is the best choice for anyone that wants complete control over the light entering their homes. Good quality blackout window shades can stop 99% of the suns rays coming in, and in many cases are a necessity, albeit an expensive one. There are many different reasons why you may want to block the light from coming in. For example, if you have a home cinema, then it’s important that you manage the lighting in that room so as to reduce the glare on the big screen. Shift workers are another example of people who will benefit greatly from this type of window covering. For someone who has to work all night, it can be really hard for your body to adjust to sleeping while it’s light outside. A set of blackout roller shades will trick your brain into thinking that it is night time, and give you more chance of getting a decent “nights” sleep.

Another reasons for installing a blackout shade in your home is for babies that sleep a lot during the day. blackout shadesMany new parents don’t realise just how many hours a baby will sleep each day, and it is imperative that you make the nursery as comfortable as possible to ensure that they get all the sleep their growing bodies need. A side benefit of blackout blinds is that they will reduce the amount of heat entering your home, or keep the heat in when it is cold outside. They will even help to dampen any noises, such as traffic and the neighbour’s dogs.

Browse Our Selection Of Blackout Shades

Blackout roller shades are the most popular style, and this is mainly because they are the cheapest of all the options out there. While they are extremely inexpensive and easy to install, they are not incredibly aesthetically pleasing, and if it’s a fashionable decor that you are looking for in your home, then you would be better off looking at something like blackout roman shades.

Some people seem to think that if a shade is a blackout, then it’s literally going to be black. The truth is that these shades come in a whole rainbow of colors, and looking at them you may not even know that they are blackout shades. Apart from romans and roller shades that we have mentioned, you can also get the ever popular bamboo and honeycomb blinds with blackout material lining the back of them. There are also blackout curtain solutions available if you would prefer to go down that road.

The most effective material for blackout shades is fibreglass, and while this is the best solution, it is also the most expensive. For those of you on a bit more of a tight budget, you can get almost as good a result from the more popular vinyls and plastics available. Don’t get confused when shopping for blackout shades, some shops will label their products as “room darkening” shades, and while they do filter out a lot of light, they are not a complete blackout solution.

Chandelier Shades

Up until now we’ve been talking primarily about ways to cover your windows and doors, in order to control the amount of light that comes into your house during the day. There are, however, other lights than the sun, and sometimes you need to take control of the lights inside of your house to create the exact ambiance you are after. If you are lucky enough to have a chandelier in your home, then you will know what a difference one of these light fitting can make to the room that it hangs in. A chandelier is a wonderful addition to just about any room.

The word chandelier originates from the France, and literally means “candle stick”. When the chandelier was first invented, that’s exactly what it was. It was usually a frame made from wood that was fashioned in the form of a cross. At the end of each arm was a spike, and it was on that spike that you attached your candles. As technology advanced, candles where replaced with gas, and finally electricity, the chandeliers getting brighter and brighter with each subsequent improvement. In modern times, many people find that the glow of their chandeliers is too bright, and this is when they will turn to chandelier shades as a solution.

Not all chandeliers support shades, so you will have to determine first of all whether you are able to attach a shade to yours. If you are unsure, your best place to ask would be at a local lighting shop. Have a look at how the shades are attached and then see if yours will suit that attachment. chandelier shadesThe great thing about the chandelier shade is that they are easy to mix and match. You needn’t settle for one style, and there are many different occasions where a new shade will help to fit the current mood. For example, if you are planning a romantic dinner with a loved one, you may want a shade that gives off a more subdued light; whereas if you are planning a big cocktail party, something more colorful and cheery may be in order. There’s such a huge range out there that you shouldn’t have any problems finding one that suits your occasion, whether it’s Halloween or a kids birthday party. Some people love to create a gothic type look in their bedrooms, and a black chandelier can be the perfect way of adding that finishing touch.

Compared to the actual chandelier, the shades are dirt cheap, which is why it’s not going to be a problem to switch them up as often as you like. As with anything, there is a wide range of prices out there, and in most cases you will get what you pay for. But if your not too fussy you should be able to pick up a whole set of shades of varying types for under $100, and if you are willing to buy in bulk you will probably get even more of a discount.

There’s a huge range of materials that chandelier shades come in, and the material you choose will largely depend on the style of your home and the decor within. Getting a plain colored fabric shade can diffuse the light nicely while not taking away from the overall look of your chandelier, but if you are after something a little fancier, you may want to look at beaded chandelier shades. A beaded shade has beads dangling off the end of the shade, giving it a “fringe” and enhancing the look of your chandelier. Other options include embroidered, silk, leather, and even metal. Designers have let their imaginations run wild with these fabrics, so as long as you don’t mind doing a bit of searching, you will be spoilt for choice

Outdoor Shades – Keeping Your Cool Outside

If you are lucky enough to be the owner (or renter) of a home that has a patio attached to it, then you will realise just how important the outdoor shade is. Your home is a place for you to get away from it all and relax, but having a structure attached to the outside of your house allows you to enjoy the best of both worlds; to be able to relax outdoors and watch the birds in the comfort and privacy of your own space. The only problem is that the time when you need to get out of the house the most is in the middle of summer, when it gets hot and stuffy inside. If you haven’t got sufficient shade on your patio, then you are going to be sitting inside, looking out the window, and wishing you could be out there. For these reasons, outdoor shades are almost a necessity, and if you haven’t got one on your deck, then you should definitely consider getting one, the expense is well worth it.

There are many different materials that outdoor shades are made from, and I’d like to discuss a few of them with you. The most popular in recent times is solar screen fabric, which is a material especially, designed for this very purpose. This fabric is great, as it blocks out the majority of the heat from the summer sun, and will reduce the glare as well. It can be awfully uncomfortable sitting on your patio and squinting from the sun in your eyes, especially when you are trying to enjoy a good book. Solar screen fabric does a great job of blocking out all of those harmful UV rays as well, keeping you and your family safe. Other materials include polyester, fibreglass, polyethylene and acrylic. t should be noted that fibreglass is not extremely strong, and will easily tear if exposed to high winds. If strength is a concern, then polyethylene is a great choice, as it will withstand a great deal of beating without getting wrecked.

outdoor shadesIThe material used in outdoor patio shades is sold in different thicknesses, commonly referred to as it’s “openness” setting. This refers to the thickness of the weave. The looser the weave is on your shade, the more light will come through. Most good retailers that sell these shades will be able to give you demonstrations of the the different degrees of openness, which will make your decision a lot easier.

A lot of people have trouble when trying to choose a color for their outdoor sun shades. You obviously want the shade to blend in with the style of your home as much as possible, and there are a huge range of hues that you can choose from. The most important thing to remember is that the darker the color, the more heat will be allowed through. If you live in an area that has extreme summer heat, then a bright color is going to be much more effective for your needs.

There is a shade to match almost any situation you could imagine. Depending on which way your patio is facing, and what other shelter is around (for example, trees and roof overhang), you may not need a shade that goes straight over the top of your porch, Many people prefer to have a shade running down one side where the afternoon sun hits, while others love the allure of a shade sail. You can also get outdoor window shades, which are especially designed so that you cannot see through them from the outside, but can still look out from the interior.

Bamboo Roman Shades – A Classic Choice

If you are considering new blinds for your home, then one of the best decisions you could ever make is to look at bamboo roman shades. This style of window treatment has many great benefits, and will make a tremendous addition to your home decor. It wasn’t so long ago that bamboo was not as prevalent as it is now, and people put a lot of effort into trying to achieve that natural look by using something made of plastic. Of course, any synthetic material is going to fall short of the real thing, and using these fake materials really defeats the purpose of wanting a natural look in the first place.

As public demand has grown, more and more manufacturers have stepped up to the plate, and now there is a huge variety of bamboo roman shade available. Many styles of window coverings are only found in specialist shops, but bamboo has become so popular that you can find it in many different shops, from your local hardware shop to your supermarket chain, you should have no trouble finding shades of this variety. The versatility of bamboo means that you can use bamboo roman shades to great effect in just about any room in your home, however you will want to be careful if you are planning on using them in rooms that gather a lot of moisture. If this is the case, you will want to make sure that the bamboo roman blinds you purchase a specially treated to withstand this moist atmosphere.

bamboo roman shadesThe beauty of bamboo is that it is versatile enough to use in almost any setting. If you have a modern style house, then the use of bamboo will help break it up a little and add some warmth to your rooms. On the other hand, if your home is of a more traditional style, then the natural effect of bamboo will blend in tremendously with your decor. It is for this reason that bamboo can also be used for many different types of window covering. The most popular use of bamboo for shades is in the style of roll up blinds, however many people don’t realise just how effective natural bamboo roman shades can be. The gentle undulating curves of a roman blind, when used with an organic material such as bamboo, can have an incredible impact on your windows, and is sure to be a talking point in any home.

Although it very tempting to buy your bamboo roman shades online, you need to be careful of a few things when doing so. Firstly, make sure that the website you are considering purchasing from is a reputable one. Do a search for the company name to make sure that there haven’t been a spate of complaints associated with their business practices. People will more often than not jump online to let everyone know if they have had a bad experience, and this gives us a lot more power as a potential buyer to make an informed decision. You also need to be careful, when buying on the Internet, that there are no hidden costs involved in your purchase. Sometimes these businesses won’t tell you about shipping and insurance until you at the last stage of purchasing, and many people miss these costly additions until they have entered their credit card information. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not all doom and gloom, as long as you are careful with your purchasing you can pick up some great bargains on the net. In fact, you will find a much wider range of bamboo roman window shades online than you could ever hope to find in one or two retails stores.
