For starters, you are going to have to choose what style of blind you want. For windows with irregular shapes, this is an important decision, as the style of curtain will either accentuate or disguise the window. For larger windows, made to measure vertical blinds can be a great solution, as they will tuck right out of the way when not in use, allowing you to make the most of the view out of your window, while still giving you the option of filtering the light that comes in when needed.

Next, you are going to have to get all your measurements right. If you have money to throw around, you can get a professional to come out and do this measuring for you, but it’s really not all that involved, and you shouldn’t have any trouble doing it yourself. All you will need is a tape measure, a writing pad, and a pencil. You will need to take 5 measurements. The length of your window both at the top and the bottom, and the height on the left and right hand sides. Finally, you need to determine how far you want your blind to hang down, which is your fifth measurement. If your window is an irregular shape, then the method is still the same. For example, if it is round, or hexagonal, you still need to measure the width of the window at its widest point, and the height at it’s longest, ensuring that the blind will cover the entire window.
Once you have decided on the style of blind you are after, and collected your window measurements, you are left with two choices. You can either order your blinds online, or find a retail shop in your area that specialise in made to measure blinds. The benefit of physically going into a shop is that you can give the salesperson a clearer idea of what your unique needs are.
The down side of having a blind custom made is obvious; it’s going to cost you a whole lot more. Ready made blinds are mass produced in factories for very little cost, but when purchasing something that can’t be created by a cookie cutter machine; the process is a lot more labour intensive, which means more expense to you.
