Choosing the right designer curtain fabric has become quite a difficult task for the home owner that wants to create a uniform yet aesthetically pleasing decor in their home. There are many different fabrics that can be utilised on your windows. Here is a list of our favorites…
Muslin - Muslin is a fabric that is woven from cotton. Beleived to have originated in Greece, but made popular in 18th century France, muslin is most loved and used for it’s breathing properties, making it the perfect fabric to use in hot and dry climates.
Silk Taffeta – One of the more expensive fabrics, silk taffeta has a smooth texture and is often used in the making of wedding dresses. India is considered the prime producer of silk tafetta.
Linen - Created from flax plant fibres, linen is one of the most common materials used in curtain design. It is well known for keeping cool during hot days, making it a perfect candidate for those rooms that face the hot afternoon sun. As well as being the most popular fabric, linen is widely considered the oldest, dating back as far as 8,000 BC.
Damask - More well known for its use in covering upholstery, Damask is also used to a lesser extent in fabric curtain design. Damask has a very tight weave, making it more expensive than other weaves, but also making it extremely strong and able to withstand harsh environments.
Velvet - Arguably the most luxurious of fabrics, if you are going to use velvet on your windows, then be aware that it will make a bold statement, and provide your room with an air of luxirous decadence. Velvet is actually a woven tufted fabric, and some people don’t like it because the “grain” of the fabric can change the look of the curtain.
Voile - If velvet is too rich for your tastes, and you are after something light and airy in your room, then voile is the fabric for you. Made of pure cotton, or of a blend between cotton, and linen, the word voile orginates in France and means “veil”. This is exactly the type of look this fabric will give your window, as it allows air and sunlight through, while providing enough of a screen to have privacy in your home.
You will benefit from having a one of a kind item, something that no one else in the world has, and this makes your home all the more interesting and unique. Visitors will be drawn to items that they haven’t seen before, and you will have the joy of knowing that they are not going to see that exact curtain anywhere else.
