I’ll be honest with you here, when I first heard of motorized blinds I scoffed. I thought to myself “Just how lazy can the human race get?”. But after a little research, I realised just how important this technology is, and the valid rationales for using them. The vast majority of the market is corporate offices. I’m sure that most offices in the city that you have visited have motorized window coverings of some sort. This is by no means the only place you will find motorized blinds though.
Installing motorized window blinds can be of great benefit to the disabled, and elderly people, who find it a little more difficult to get around the house. We may take it for granted, but a trip around your home to open all the shades on a hot summers day can be an extremely difficult task for some people. Installing a motor in the blinds that are used most often will alleviate this problem, and give these people more freedom and self sufficiency. Another valid motive for having a motor installed in your window coverings is for those windows that are difficult to reach. I remember in my old house we had a window that was 7 feet off the bathroom floor, and afternoon sun would shine straight through it in the middle of summer. I had to climb up on our toilet every afternoon to pull the shade down, I’m lucky I didn’t break my neck, and if I had known then what I know now, I would have definitely installed a motorized window blind.
Usually these motors will come with a remote control that you use to open and close your blinds. If you are going to get motors on your blinds, then it’s best to them all at once. This way, you can set it up so that you have just the one remote for multiple blinds. It’s bad enough trying to keep track of where the television remote is, without having to worry about a remote for every window in your home as well. Usually these remotes will come with a holder that can be attached to the wall next to the window, this makes it much easier to keep track of where it is.

There are two different types of motorized functionality you can get for blinds. Motorized tilt blinds are for window coverings that have slats in them, like wooden blinds. These motors will tilt the slats backwards and forwards, allowing the sun to shine through the slats as needed. The other type is motorized lift blinds. These are the ones you install for roman blinds and the like, the ones that pull up and down. Both types are fairly simple to install, and are battery operated, so you don’t need to worry about hiring an electrician just to get them up and running.
Many people don’t even give motorized blinds a second thought, as they just assume that the price of such functionality would be out of their reach. This is not the case, and if you think you could benefit from a motorized blind, it would be well worth your while to do a little research into the costs involved. You may be pleasantly surprised.
